Seg\u00fan&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/public.axsmarine.com\/alphaliner\"><strong>Alphaliner<\/strong><\/a>, \u201cha sido en los \u00faltimos 25 a\u00f1os que el sector ha registrado un crecimiento sin precedentes\u201d, tanto en tama\u00f1o de flota como en estructura empresarial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En el a\u00f1o 2000, la flota mundial de portacontenedores sumaba apenas 4,5 millones de TEUs. A fines de 2025, esa cifra alcanza los 33,6 millones de TEUs, es decir, un crecimiento de m\u00e1s de siete veces en el transcurso de la vida comercial de un buque. El n\u00famero de naves aument\u00f3 de 2.622 a 7.492, mientras que el tama\u00f1o promedio se elev\u00f3 desde unas 1.700 TEUs hasta cerca de 4.500 TEUs. El propio libro de ordenes actual \u2014cercano a 11 millones de TEUs\u2014 \u201ces m\u00e1s del doble del tama\u00f1o de la flota mundial existente en el a\u00f1o 2000\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Este crecimiento estuvo impulsado por&nbsp;<strong>factores estructurales<\/strong>: la expansi\u00f3n de las cadenas log\u00edsticas multimodales, el modelo de producci\u00f3n&nbsp;<em>just-in-time<\/em>, el aumento de la poblaci\u00f3n y de la clase media global, y especialmente la relocalizaci\u00f3n (<em>reshoring<\/em>) industrial hacia Asia.&nbsp;<em>Alphaliner<\/em>&nbsp;subraya que la incorporaci\u00f3n de China a la Organizaci\u00f3n Mundial de Comercio (OMC) en 2001 y su consolidaci\u00f3n como \u201cla f\u00e1brica del mundo\u201d fue clave para el fuerte aumento de vol\u00famenes en las principales rutas Este-Oeste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La expansi\u00f3n de la flota fue sostenida durante dos d\u00e9cadas, con incrementos netos cercanos a 1 mill\u00f3n de TEUs anuales entre 2003 y 2023. Sin embargo, en los \u00faltimos dos a\u00f1os el crecimiento se aceler\u00f3 a m\u00e1s de 2 millones de TEUs por a\u00f1o. Aun as\u00ed,&nbsp;<em>Alphaliner<\/em>&nbsp;advierte que m\u00e1s capacidad nominal no se traduce autom\u00e1ticamente en mayor oferta efectiva. \u201cUna parte significativa del crecimiento ha sido absorbida por velocidades de navegaci\u00f3n mucho m\u00e1s lentas\u201d, junto con mayores tiempos de espera y congesti\u00f3n portuaria. El&nbsp;<em>slow steaming<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014pr\u00e1ctica operativa mediante la cual los portacontenedores navegan deliberadamente a velocidades inferiores a su dise\u00f1o con el objetivo de reducir el consumo de combustible, los costos operativos y las emisiones\u2014se ha convertido en un rasgo estructural del sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paralelamente, la industria vivi\u00f3 un&nbsp;<strong>proceso de concentraci\u00f3n<\/strong>&nbsp;sin precedentes. En 2000, las 20 mayores l\u00edneas navieras operaban en conjunto 3,9 millones de TEUs; hoy administran 30,5 millones de TEUs, lo que equivale a un aumento del 675%. En el mismo per\u00edodo, la participaci\u00f3n de las diez mayores en capacidad global pas\u00f3 de 61% a 84%. Entre 2017 y 2024 \u201cla consolidaci\u00f3n extrema permiti\u00f3 que el salto desde 20 a 30 millones de TEUs se lograra en solo siete a\u00f1os\u201d, destaca&nbsp;<em>Alphaliner<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El liderazgo tambi\u00e9n cambi\u00f3 de escala. En 2000,&nbsp;<strong>Maersk&nbsp;<\/strong>encabezaba el ranking con menos de 700.000 TEUs. Hoy,&nbsp;<strong>MSC<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014que entonces operaba apenas 247.000 TEUs\u2014 se convirti\u00f3 en la primera l\u00ednea naviera en superar los 7 millones de TEUs, con una flota que \u201ces casi el doble del tama\u00f1o de todos los Top 20 combinados en el a\u00f1o 2000\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Este proceso tuvo como contracara la desaparici\u00f3n de numerosos nombres hist\u00f3ricos.&nbsp;<strong>Dos grandes olas de consolidaci\u00f3n&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2014en 2005 y entre 2014 y 2018\u2014 dieron lugar a la absorci\u00f3n o retiro de l\u00edneas navieras emblem\u00e1ticas como&nbsp;<strong>P&amp;O Nedlloyd<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>CSAV<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Hamburg S\u00fcd<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>UASC<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>CCNI<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Hanjin Shipping<\/strong>&nbsp;o&nbsp;<strong>APL&nbsp;<\/strong>(aunque esta \u00faltima a\u00fan subsiste como marca). Adem\u00e1s, \u201cLos colores de&nbsp;<strong>NYK<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>MOL<\/strong>&nbsp;y \u201c<strong>K\u201d Line<\/strong>&nbsp;desaparecieron de los mares\u201d tras la creaci\u00f3n de ONE, resume&nbsp;<em>Alphaliner&nbsp;<\/em>al describir el alcance del cambio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En&nbsp;<strong>t\u00e9rminos financieros<\/strong>, los grandes grupos tambi\u00e9n se transformaron. Para las siete l\u00edneas navieras que reportaban resultados en 2000 y siguen activas, los ingresos promedio se cuadruplicaron. CMA CGM, por ejemplo, pas\u00f3 de facturar US$1.900 millones en 2000 a US$36.500 millones en 2024, escalando desde el puesto 12 al tercer lugar global.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pese a todos estos cambios, la estructura de propiedad mostr\u00f3 una notable estabilidad. El n\u00famero de grandes carriers listados en bolsa se mantiene pr\u00e1cticamente igual que hace 25 a\u00f1os, mientras que gigantes como MSC y CMA CGM contin\u00faan siendo empresas privadas y familiares.
